I'm beginning to notice that a lot of my posts are about food. I really like food; I like to think about it, look at it,
druel over it, smell it, cook it and especially eat it.
Mmmmm, food. I like food enough that some of you may be wondering if I am really pregnant, or if I just ate an entire chocolate cake by myself.
Mmmmm, chocolate cake...
This post is,
surprise, related to food. Last Friday, Brandon and I decided to kick off the weekend by going to go out to eat. We debated asking some friends to watch Ashley for us so that we could make it a date, but decided to bring her along. We have some mental illness that causes us to prefer to have our child with us (what can we say, we like her a lot). Or at least we HAD that mental illness. I think our experience at the restaurant may have cured us.
We really like Italian cuisine. One of our favorite
Italian places here in Vegas (its the only one we've tried) is
Carrabas. We've only been a few times because it is a little pricey. The evening started off good enough, we were seated quickly and brought some super yummy bread to munch on while we salivated over the options on the menu. The bread probably made me salivate even more, its really good. We don't typically order a meal just for Ashley, she usually wants what we are eating anyway so we just give her food from our plate. This time we decided to order her own meal, cheese ravioli. MISTAKE!
The waitress promised to send her meal out with our soup so that she wouldn't have to wait to eat. When our soup arrived, no ravioli for Ashley. We thought, that's no big deal, we will just keep giving her bread and maybe pull out some chunks from our soup to share with her. That did not go over well with her. She was sitting next to her Daddy, and insisted that she get to eat out of his bowl of soup. It was totally not okay that all she got was chunks on a plate, she wanted a bowl. We managed to keep the situation mostly under control until she saw Brandon dipping is bread in his soup, then she HAD to dip her bread in his soup too. Poor Brandon, I think he was a little helpless and at that point just let her do it.
The bread basket emptied pretty quickly. Our waitress promised to bring more bread when she dropped off the soup, but didn't. Finally our food arrived, but we didn't have any silverware, so we had to sit and stare at our food getting cold while we waited for silverware and extra napkins. Finally, the silverware gets there. But we still have no bread and they forgot Ashley's milk. Just after the waitress leaves, we realize that the silverware bundles do not include spoons, so Ashley can't eat yet. Brandon and I couldn't eat in front of her, so we all sat and waited for someone to show up with the bread and milk. Luckily they brought the spoon pretty quickly after we asked for it, but after all of the waiting, our food was only
luke warm by the time we were able to eat.
We let Ashley start out drinking her milk from the
Styrofoam cup with a straw. That worked out great until she managed to puncture the straw through the side of the cup. Milk spewed everywhere, all over Ashley, the seat and Brandon. Luckily I had an empty
sippy cup in my purse, so we were able to get the spill under control. Who knows how long we would have to wait for the waitress to bring us anything.
So, to wrap up a long story, Ashley didn't even touch her ravioli. We had a crappy waitress, and as a result Brandon and I had a
luke warm meal. When it came time to leave a tip, we were torn between the crappy
service we had received and the huge mess we were leaving behind because of Ashley and her milk.
We went grocery shopping on our way home from the restaurant and spent less money on a weeks worth of groceries than we did for our meal. It is going to be a long time before we eat out again, and then we probably won't bring Ashley with us.
As an update on the tofu, Brandon and I did try it out. It actually smells and tastes very similar to winter squash. That was a plus for us, we are squash people. The texture is, I'm not even sure how to describe it. I cooked it up in a sauce and we ate it over pasta. It was pretty good, but I am still really intimidated on how to prepare it. We aren't crossing it off our list, but it will probably be a while before we try it again.
