You can take the Boy out of the Farm but you can't take the Farm out of the Boy!

Brandon and I spent his last Saturday before the new semester building a little patio garden. We found a nursery here in Henderson that had some really good deals on vegetable plants and pots, so we bought a bunch of stuff and got to work. It cost about $50 for everything, but we had to buy dirt to fill all of our pots and fertilizer, which we won't have to buy again next year. We figure between this year and next year, we will more than recover our out of pocket expense. We spent a couple hours actually planting everything, which is really kind of pathetic considering that we really only planted a few things.

We ended up with 4 tomato plants, 1 green pepper, 1 yellow crook-neck squash (they were out of zucchini), 2 cucumbers and we have a few pots reserved for lettuce that we will plant from seed in a couple weeks. We are basically growing salad. If our plants thrive, we should be eating tomatoes sometime around the end of May/beginning of June.

We aren't sure what to expect with our squash and cucumbers. They can be pretty viney, and I'm a little nervous about them taking over our patio, but I guess we'll see what happens. This whole thing is an experiment, neither one of us has tried growing vegetables under these circumstances, but we are both really excited about the prospect of home grown produce again. We really missed that last year. Too bad our patio isn't big enough for corn, potatoes, and sweet meat squash too.

I will be interested to hear how they grow.

But if the patio was big enough, I am sure they would be there too. ;o)

That's cool...we've been thinking about doing this ourselves. Where did you go to get your supplies?

We planted a garden in pots one year so we could take it with us when we moved. The summer squash did great and we had plenty of tomatoes and herbs. Since I worked at greenhouse/flower shop at the time we also had TONS of flowers : ). Good luck. We are sad that we won't have much of a garden this year because we don't know if we will be here for the harvest (graduation!). Our garden did great last year. Thanks for the potatoes. They were my favorite, and it was a sad day two weeks ago as we ate the last of them.
